Eczema Outreach Scotland

Back in 2014, we were commissioned by a new charity to showcase the effects of eczema on their sufferers, and parents and make a video expressing the positive outlook on their road ahead dealing with the problem.

Our Future

Project Info

The Future of Higher Education was a video made in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, ESRC, CREID and CES documenting the Scottish Independence Referendum’s likely effect on Higher Education fees, and what this means to future students. We foccussed much of the film on the point of view of prospective and non-prospective students who would by 16 or older come the time of the vote, to really get a handle on their age-group’s opinion on the matter, as well as experts in the field.

Step 1

We determined a style and format for shooting at the various schools around Edinburgh, and with the aid of a rep from the U of E we spent the best part of a year talking to various schools and education institutions and representatives about the impact of the referendum. Unedited rushes were delivered to the client for transcribing.

Step 2

We began the process of editing the interviews based on a rough script that we had worked on with the client, and made sure to acquire any additional pick-ups on location that would help give the film more of an impact, ultimately for children to watch in their classrooms.

Step 3

We added a graphical style to the video with the client’s approval, and set to work editing a long-form version, and a few shorter versions with each section of the video divided up, so that at school, the children could watch each segment individually and then answer a related questionnaire on the topic for use in schools.

The University of Edinburgh was delighted with the resulting video, and were able to share this in schools and collages, and with government officials to showcase the important research they were carrying out, as well as making Scottish youth voices feel heard.

Brazil

Project Info

We were approached by an independent arts organization Capall Dorcha for promoting a new theatre production, based on playwright Ronan O’Donnell’s 1980s-inspired dystopian future set in a Scottish council estate, called ‘Brazil’, where Europe is at war with America. Instead of the usual highlights shot in a theatre and some quotes from the show, which we can do just as adeptly, we decided to make a more cinematic movie-style trailer for the show.

Step 1

We looked through the material used for the show and collaborated in choosing the most relevant scenes that would help define the style and tone of the play. Once agreed, we set out on recces of various locations that could double as a dystopian future council estate, as well as organising shooting the Newsroom and piece to camera scenes in the RareBird Studio.

Step 2

Principle photography in the studio, of the Newsroom scene, shot on green screen and later the background keyed out and replaced, as well as the low key shooting of Barry playing three different characters in the show, also in the studio with a black felt backdrop.

Step 3

Shot in 4k, we mastered it at the highest resolution, having looked for suitable Newsroom backdrops and testing out various old television style effects. We delivered the video to the client for them to use to promote their show next year.

Capall Dorcha were excited by the video, with the high-resolution 4k images reflecting the high-standard of acting and atmosphere created with the film.

Lidl Health Factor

Project Info

The Lidl Health Factor (http://www.lidlhealthfactor.co.uk) is an initiative launched by Lidl aimed at improving the health of Scotland’s children. The interactive video animation that we were asked to produce for Lidl Scotland for this reflects the importance of healthy eating and exercise to Primary school children around the country.

Step 1

We looked online at examples of contemporary styles of animation as wanted to create something that kids could engage with, in a style that seemed in touch and popular with our age group. After client approval on the initial style templates and script delivery, we set to work.

Step 2

The animations were created, along with a temp score and effects by a dedicated composer and sound designer, with actor voices recorded at high-end recording facility with a director on site. Once mixed, this was sent for client approval.

Step 3

The final client alts were made, and the lip-synching was finalised, as well as any small tweaks required. The client were delighted, and we were able to test out the resulting Blu-Ray on the Health Factor Bus before it went out to schools around the country, making a genuine difference in pupils’ eating habits and exercise.

The client was thrilled with the resulting film, particularly with the incredibly fast turnaround, and more importantly, the kids were able to interact with it as originally intended, helping the staff on the bus teach the children new, healthier eating habits and reasons why it is important.
